SHORT STORY REVIEW : THE GROWNUP BY GILLIAN FLYNN

It may sound sad and pathetic but this is my very first Gillian Flynn book. I know she's everywhere, here BOOKS are everywhere, but for some reasons I've never had the chance to pick up any. I was in the mood of having a short story and so I thought why not pick this one instead. By the way I don't own any of the physical copy of the book, but I listened to the audiobook instead. Audiobooks are my best companion these days, when I have to travel about 2 HOURS to work using the train...

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan's terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan's teenage stepson, doesn't help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

I didn't read the GR's summary when I decided to listen to the book. It's simply because I've heard the name so many times before which sort of turned it into a guarantee, don't you think? So I basically didn't know what this short story is all about, I didn't know the genre, the premise, or even what was happening at the beginning of the book. But the first two sentences hooked me up instantly.

I didn't stop giving hand jobs because I wasn't good at it.I stopped giving hand jobs because I was the best at it.

Since I listened to this on audiobook, I wan to talk about it first.

It wasn't necessarily a perfect audiobook... I would rate the narrator 3.5/5 stars. For some reasons I didn't enjoy the way she uses the different voices, which by the way, weren't consistent enough. She would have different voices for the same person and I didn't really enjoy how she portrays the boy (Miles).

As for the story, I was very captivated from the very beginning. It got the most intense in the middle, I was scared for most of the characters and I need to know whats happening at the end. It was just thrilling and near the ending, there were many twists. Many Many Many twists. I love how the details were written, how it made me feel like knowing the backstory seemed like a good idea and I enjoy the most part of it.

In conclusion, I love the whole idea of the story. I really didn't expect it to be a thriller at first, I don't know, I guess judging from the book cover. But anyway, the non-ending was crap. So to say, I was having a great time the first 95% of the book, and the puff! I was lost into nothingness. Well after listening to the book, I wen on and read some of the other reviews on GR, and I read that this wa supposed to be a part of a larger book, is it? Well, if it is, should be put that way instead of publishing it on it's own. The non-ending... NOOO!
